Russia, China, Iran Dispatch Naval Vessels to Strait of Hormuz
Speaking to the weekly publication Argumenty i Fakty, Patrushev outlined Moscow's ambitions to challenge Western dominance at sea, stating that Russia is actively working to establish a "multipolar world order on the oceans."
"We will tap into the potential of BRICS, which should now be given a full-fledged strategic maritime dimension," he said.
Patrushev further revealed that the inaugural BRICS naval exercise — designated "Will for Peace 2026" — took place this past January in the South Atlantic, drawing participation from Russia, China, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and South Africa. The drills centered on coordinating the protection of global trade routes, which Patrushev described as increasingly at risk.
"The Maritime Security Belt 2026 exercises in the Strait of Hormuz, where Russia, China, and Iran sent their ships, proved to be relevant," he added.
According to an Iranian news agency, the Maritime Security Belt exercises are scheduled to be hosted by Tehran in mid-February in the Strait of Hormuz — a narrow but vital chokepoint connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and one of the world's most consequential maritime corridors.
The trilateral naval drills, originally launched in 2019 at Iran's initiative, have now been conducted seven times.
